The toddler years are a great time to introduce your kids to how wonderful it is to support local arts organizations. As a long-time theatre lover, for me this means bringing my toddler to theatre. While ages 1-3 are not great ages for Broadway, they are wonderful ages for exposure to local children’s theatre!!
Children’s theatre really offers two categories. Theatre done by professionals designed for young audiences (often titled Theatre for Young Audiences), and then there is children’s theatre performed by children. Both experiences can be lots of fun for little kids enjoying their first few theatrical experiences.
Brick Children’s Community Theatre has been around and serving creative kids since I was small and their performances have always been wonderful. Their production values (lights, sets, costumes) are always surprisingly good for youth theatre and these productions are also shorter by design (to keep it easy for those young brains to memorize all those lines!).
Knowing that they often sell out, I bought tickets early for their production of The Little Mermaid Jr. I had a hunch that my little guy would really enjoy the sea vibes and animal costumes— and I was right on. The audience was filled with young siblings of the performers and local kids alike– all of which were mesmerized by the kids on stage. We had a wonderful time and my three year old enhanced the whole experience with his adorable commentary during the scenes. He was so engaged in the story and loved the costumes, use of puppetry and the characters.
BCCT’s THE LITTLE MERMAID JR will be holding encore performances outside at Windward Beach Park on September 20th at 21st 2024. For tickets and more information, please visit https://www.bcct.org. Brick Children’s always pulls together excellent casts of talented youth so even adults can thoroughly enjoy their performances. Finding this blog at a later date?
