This little museum had been on my radar for a bit and I am so thrilled we finally made it over! Insectropolis in Toms River is a happy salute to all things BUGS! I am not a huge fan of bugs, and I am happy to report that I still found the outing super enjoyable for both myself and my three year old.
Insectropolis is an easy visit that only took an hour or so for us to enjoy. If you have an older child who likes to read the bug facts, you’ll likely stay a bit longer. Upon arrival, make sure you find out when the presentation times are, because they are worth sticking around for if you want up close looks at some creepy crawlies (and even an opportunity to touch them!). At our presentation we got to see a millipede, scorpion, tarantula and a hissing cockroach. It was really cool!
The price for the experience was an affordable $12 per person and ages 2 and under were FREE. The Museum creates an easy circular path that goes through the whole building and consists of multiple areas dedicated to different types of bugs. It was really fun to explore the many colors of butterflies, beetles and more! There’s room for strollers, but you’ll likely want to take your little one out so they can actually get a good look at the exhibits. I found myself lifting up my toddler for closer looks at several cases.
There’s plenty to learn with special write-ups on each species, but as a toddler mama, you don’t get to spend too much time at each area when you have an excited kid pointing out the next case of bugs. I still enjoyed reading fun facts I could grab quickly as I moved along the museum path.
Aside from the live presentation, highlights for us were the beautiful wall murals, the bees, and the numerous spiders (several of which had recently molted which was cool to see!). We thought the whole experience was really great and got two souvenir pennies and a little treat from the gift shop on the way out (little bugs of course!).
We love celebrating a local biz so Local mamas– check it out! Let us know which part was YOUR favorite!
